Here are some excerpts from Def Jam’s new artist, Mann’s biography on Myspace.

“…In August of 2008, Mann met with David Massey president of the newly re-formed legendary Jazz label Mercury Records now a part of Island Def Jam Music Group. Mann recalls “I met Dave in his hotel and the cd player barely worked but I performed my songs anyway and he was blown away”…. He is the first rapper signed to Mercury Records since Kurtis Blow.”

Jay-Z No Longer Signed to Def Jam

By Kim Osorio

In an exclusive interview with Rapradar.com, Jay-Z confirmed that he is a free agent. The rapper/mogul cleared up the rumors that have been lurking on the internet, implying that Def Jam had bought him out.

“Doug [Morris] and I spoke directly and had one of the most unique ‘negotiations’ ever. Doug won the toss, but we both won in the end,” said Jay. “I thank him for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music.”

Jay-Z stepped down from his post as President of Def Jam in December of 2007, after having served in the position for three years. When Jay-Z signed to the label as a solo artist back in the mid-90s, he was contractually bound to record ten albums for the label. Jay-Z has released nine albums on Def Jam, and was scheduled to release The Blueprint 3 later this year. No word as of yet where his next album will be released.

Jay summed up his relationship with Def Jam on a positive note. “I can honestly say, working with Doug Morris and L.A. Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience and I respect them immensely. I’ve been in the family for almost my entire career.”
